Privacy Policy

BrightRubric is writing practice for grades 3–12. We collect as little as we can and involve a parent before a child's writing is scored or stored. This policy explains what we handle and why. For a parent-focused summary, see our Parents' Notice.

The information we handle

• A. Parent account information: your email and a hashed password; your subscription status and identifiers from our payment processor (never your card number).
• B. Child profile information: a nickname and grade level a parent chooses. We do not ask children for a name, email, or age.
• C. Child writing: the essay text, the writing prompt, grade, and essay type. Essays are free-form and may contain personal information if a child includes it; we ask that unnecessary identifying details be left out.
• D. Technical / internal-operation information: a random device token and a short-lived record of the IP address, used to run and secure the service (for example, rate-limiting). A device is identified by this token, not by name — this is pseudonymous, not anonymous.
• E. Scoring and progress information: scores, feedback, revision history, and progress derived from the writing.
• F. Composition signals: for each essay, the active typing time, a count of keystrokes typed, and the number of characters pasted in the editor — counts and timings only, not the keys pressed or the pasted text. Used to show a parent a simple “how it was written” note; stored with the essay and deleted with it; not sent to Anthropic.
• G. Payment information: handled by our payment processor (Stripe); we receive only a customer/subscription identifier and status.
• H. Email / communications: your email address, used to run your account and, if you opt in, to send a periodic progress summary, via our email provider.
• I. Parent-created content & preferences: optional custom writing prompts you author, and writing-routine preferences (the days, a time, and your timezone). Stored with your account; a routine contains no child contact information. A custom prompt is processed like any other prompt when a child writes to it (see “How writing is scored”).

When a child's writing is collected

A child can browse and choose a writing prompt without an account, but the editor stays locked: no essay is written on the device until setup is complete. We do not receive or store a child's essay, and we do not send it to our AI provider, until a parent creates an account, completes the consent step, and a qualifying paid subscription transaction is confirmed. Account creation, a checkbox, or email verification alone — and a free trial or a $0 plan — do not unlock this.

How writing is scored

After consent, essay text, the prompt, grade, and essay type are transmitted to our AI processing provider, Anthropic, over an encrypted connection, for the limited purpose of generating a score and feedback. We do not send the child's nickname, the parent's email, the device token, the IP address, or the composition signals. Essays are stored so a student can revise and track progress.

Service providers

We share information with providers only as needed to operate BrightRubric, each limited to its role:

• Anthropic — AI processing/scoring; receives essay text + prompt + grade + type.
• Render — application and database hosting; runs the app and stores account and writing data (including handling IP addresses).
• Stripe — payment processing; handles your card and subscription (not child writing).
• Resend — transactional and opt-in email; handles your email address (not child writing).

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use children's writing for advertising or marketing profiles. We describe our AI provider's retention and model-training practices only to the extent we can confirm them; at this time we make no claim of zero data retention, no training, or a specific vendor retention period.

No third-party tracking

We use no third-party analytics, advertising, session-replay, or tracking scripts. Fonts are served from our own application, not a third-party font host.

Retention & deletion

We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service and for the purposes described here. From the dashboard a parent can delete a child's profile (removing that child's essays, scores, progress, and any prompts created only for that child) or the entire account (removing all children's data and canceling any subscription). Practice data from a device that is never linked to a family account is not retained indefinitely; we remove it on our retention schedule. Certain limited records may be retained where reasonably necessary for security, billing, or operational purposes, or to comply with applicable law.

Your choices

Parents can review their child's information through the account, delete a child profile or the account, and stop further collection by deleting the account. Contact support@brightrubric.com with questions.
